Shakti - by Bansi Khatri’s solo exhibition at Nippon Art Gallery, Mumbai 3rd to December 7th, 2024

Artist : Bansi Khatri

Bansi Khatri’s solo exhibition, Shakti, is an evocative exploration of Indian mythology, culture, and spirituality, presented through an artistic lens that merges tradition with modernity. Hosted at Contemporary Nippon Gallery in Mumbai from December 3rd to December 7th, 2024, the exhibition features a series of paintings crafted with paper, paper pulp, and acrylic on board. The works not only captivate with their aesthetic beauty but also offer a profound insight into the esoteric realms of Indian Vedic rituals, specifically focusing on Shakti—the primordial energy that powers creation.

Born in Ahmedabad in 1964 and armed with a diploma in fine arts, Bansi’s artistic foundation is steeped in the rich traditions of a Brahmin upbringing. Influenced by his grandparents and an early exposure to Vedic scriptures, Bansi developed a deep respect for ancient Indian knowledge systems. His work draws heavily from the spiritual and philosophical aspects of Indian culture, showcasing elements of TantraYantra, and Mantra, which form the spiritual geometry and symbolic language of his art.

For over two decades, Bansi has specialized in exploring the geometric forms of Lingam-YoniTantra symbols, and other metaphysical patterns that represent the union of divine energies. His art bridges the sacred and the contemporary, taking traditional concepts and reinterpreting them with innovative materials and techniques. Each piece in this collection is a visual meditation, a journey into the multi-dimensional world of spirituality, expressed through complex layers, vibrant colors, and textured surfaces.

Bansi Khatri in his studio

Bansi’s process of creation has evolved significantly over time, embracing experimentation with new surfaces and materials while maintaining the essence of Vedic traditions. He views the modern era of digitalization as an extension of ancient Indian Tantra and Mantra practices, describing it as a revolutionary phase where mechanical forms of Yantras have become tools for energy transformation. His work underscores the timeless relevance of Indian Vedic science, demonstrating its seamless integration with modern aesthetics.

The signature style of Bansi Khatri’s art is marked by its meticulous attention to detail, spiritual symbolism, and the use of layered compositions to evoke the energy dynamics of his subjects. The geometrical forms and vibrant hues resonate with a sense of harmony, balance, and spiritual transcendence. Each painting invites viewers to connect with the profound energy of Shakti and engage in a dialogue between the physical and metaphysical realms.

Through Shakti, Bansi Khatri not only pays homage to India’s cultural heritage but also inspires a contemporary understanding of its spiritual depth. The exhibition offers a unique opportunity for art lovers and spiritual seekers alike to experience the interplay of tradition and innovation, where ancient wisdom is reimagined for the modern world.

Don’t miss this extraordinary celebration of Indian culture and spirituality, which promises to be a transformative experience for all who attend.

Duct-taped banana sold for Rs 52.7 crore at auction in New York. No, seriously

Justin Sun

When Maurizio Cattelan, an Italian visual artist, duct-taped a banana to a wall in 2019, the art world went bananas — quite literally.

Now, that very concept, titled Comedian, has made headlines again when it was sold for a staggering $6.24 million (Rs 52.7 crores approximately) at an auction in New York on Wednesday. by Jen Hua

The auctioneer, Oliver Barker, couldn't resist the absurdity of the moment, calling the work "iconic" and "disruptive," while joking about auctioning a banana, as reported by CNN.

The winner bidder, Chinese entrepreneur Justin Sun, praised the artwork as a bridge between art, memes, and cryptocurrency, dubbing it a "cultural phenomenon."

"This is not just an artwork," Sun said, as reported by CNN, adding, "It represents a cultural phenomenon that bridges the worlds of art, memes, and the cryptocurrency community. I believe this piece will inspire more thought and discussion in the future and will become a part of history."

For the eye-watering price tag, Sun didn't just get a banana and tape. He also received a certificate of authenticity, installation instructions, and, presumably, bragging rights, as per the report by CNN.

This isn't Comedian's first brush with fame – or controversy. At its 2019 debut at Art Basel Miami, the $120,00 price tag had split opinions. Critics debated whether it was a masterpiece or a practical joke, while performance artist David Datuna had once peeled the banana off the wall and ate it in what he described as his own "artistic performance."

Since then, the piece has travelled, been eaten, and replaced repeatedly. Its latest outing was in South Korea, where an art student snacked on the installation, taping the peel back onto the wall.

Love it or loathe it, Comedian has firmly cemented itself in art history as a cheeky commentary on value, culture, and what we consider art – proving that sometimes, a banana isn't just a banana.
