In Sudip Roy’s paintings, the shapes and figures move very much against a large space like a landscape. It is in the handling of the paint itself that we may discover such joyousness.  Here the figures travel like travelers in a romantic landscape, surveying the prospect, or else like exploring and commentating. In the present series, paintings done on aluminum, with spray paint and acrylic, canvases with stainless steel embossed in the middle; the painted space seems more often that of an interior, often shimmering with light, the harmony he creates of tensions, ambiguities, volume, light, elusive moments.  These paintings mark as a language refer primarily to the tradition of gestural painting, unlike his previous watercolours done early in his career.  For all the act of paint handling, constructed over a period of attention to divulge their secrets to us as a viewer, the imagery stares at us, demanding that we make a will of it.  Our eye is denied the pleasure of voyaging to clearly defined vanishing point; we are continually pulled back to the surface as the illusionism is contested by application of paint and becomes an utter silence of the untranslated stars.  It is the employ of paint in all his paintings that are vital; or is with their variety and repertoire, ranging from the stillness to the exuberant or joyous, that give a pulsing life to the canvasses- the strength and fascination of the imagery.

The formidable presence of Aakriti Art Gallery under the guidance of Vikram Bachhawat in the 13th edition of Indian Art Fair as it has done in the past editions perpetuates its commitment to serious and meaningful endeavours. Considering what the gallery has offered in the past quite elucidates the fact derived from its exhibition histories that the policy has always remained a respect for senior and established talent and discernment of new promise through thoughtfully curated exhibitions.  We already know that it has also taken enormous care through exhibitions like ‘Gen Next’ to put Indian Art in a coherent and balanced manner. Though its emphasis has largely been on Indian art, in particular, it has also showcased meaningful works from abroad at regular intervals.

The gallery’s booth this year showcases works done by Sudip Roy who has contributed to the making of our contemporary art. The work presented here showcases a wonderful process and spirit that provoke a dialogue that will not question our own notion of culture but will also affect us how we imagine ourselves today in present times. The assembly is striking here, what Sudip Roy achieves is a respectful satisfying mélange- he depicts them with extreme sensitivity and candour, each  possesses a sprightly distinctive approach and ensures the meaningful representations of contemporary developments. In these paintings, and sculptures; markers and ground have become synonymous, such is the confidence in his act and vision as the imagery is fought for by the surface and the apparent depth. Sudip sees his work as embodiments of the sublime, of truth. Sudip has always been careful of elegance. He would see his as a search, or a struggle, for truth.  There is immanence, a presence to them that can seem both threatening and suggestive of possible enlightenment.

The strength and fascination of the imagery here may draw our attention away from the background or field against which they stand, but often it is the background, with their manifold inflections and nuances of paint handling which carry most of the meaning of the painting. In his sculptures, the buoyant shape is not made distinctly that shows any definitive form, the edges outlined and the shadows indicated of that of a wave- that links up with investing around in the sculpture with what is illusory or what is real, the actual shape and form. The three dimensional shapes allude to a dimensional representation which sheer poetry.  He scrambles his various sources to form the lexicon of a common visual language for us. The visual apologue he creates is always focused and profound, matrices embodied by the audience As we stand before his work, the painted steel structure invites us to take pleasure in the exuberant and energetic fresh rendition, but as we move to the side the illusion crumbles into its compartments and turned into objects of visual pleasure.
